Tunnel Visions / Paying For Sins I Don't Remember
As part of her professional placement at university, Charsley participated in a collaborative public art trail with Appetite Stoke and the Canal & River Trust, at Harecastle Tunnel in Kidsgrove. The main goal of the project was to reimagine the stretch of canal as an inviting public space, and to consider the history and natural ecology of the location by creating artwork in response to it. Themes for the work included water, companionship, storytelling and rituals.
After researching the local legends of the Kidsgrove Boggart and the Phantom Black Dog, she took the opportunity to employ her performative skills by retelling the tragedy of the Boggart from a woman's perspective. Her final work for the trail consisted of a series of 6 photograms, video and a sound installation beneath the railway bridge, including poetry by Rupi Kaur, Emma Purshouse and Roger Bloor.
